Enterprise Cisco Switch Security Hardening
Management-plane security improvements driven by Rapid7 vulnerability findings and confirmed through follow-up scanning.

The challenge
A Rapid7 vulnerability assessment identified weaknesses affecting enterprise Cisco switch management configurations, including enabled HTTP/HTTPS web-management services, legacy SNMPv2 settings, and other management-plane security exposures.
Project ownership
As a Senior Network Security Engineer during previous employment, VALO's founder owned the switch hardening initiative, reviewing the identified findings and implementing corrective configuration changes across affected devices.
Remediation approach
- Remove unneeded web-management services. Disable HTTP and HTTPS management services on the affected switches to reduce exposed management functionality.
- Modernize the monitoring protocol. Remove legacy SNMPv2 configurations and deploy SNMPv3 for network monitoring and management.
- Restrict management-plane access. Apply advanced access control lists (ACLs) to switch management interfaces to reduce unauthorized access to management services.
- Validate remediation. Perform follow-up Rapid7 vulnerability scanning to confirm that the affected findings were remediated.
Outcome
Implemented the required management-plane hardening measures and confirmed remediation of the affected vulnerabilities through follow-up Rapid7 scans. The work demonstrates network device security hardening, direct configuration ownership, and validation against identified findings.
