Over 150 Palo Alto Firewall Rules Remediated
A structured security policy remediation project led by VALO's founder in a prior senior network security engineering role.
This project was completed by VALO Technologies' founder during previous employment. It is presented as individual professional experience, not as a client engagement or contract performed by VALO Technologies LLC.
The challenge
A CIS-based security review identified over 150 firewall policy findings that required corrective action. The rulebase supported production connectivity, so the work needed to improve security controls while avoiding unnecessary disruption to legitimate application traffic.
Project ownership
In a previous Senior Network Security Engineer position, VALO's founder owned the remediation effort: reviewing the findings, planning incremental policy changes, monitoring replacement rules, and validating remediation progress.
Remediation approach
- Stage changes in manageable batches. Clone existing rules in small groups, typically around ten at a time, rather than making wholesale changes to the production rulebase.
- Refine application and service settings. Adjust replacement policies to use application-default services when appropriate for the identified applications and traffic requirements.
- Monitor behavior. Observe policy use and application connectivity during a validation period before retiring superseded entries.
- Validate and retire superseded rules. Perform follow-up checks, including Rapid7 scanning as part of the remediation process; disable original rules after validating their replacements.
Outcome
Over 150 identified firewall policy findings were remediated through phased changes, traffic monitoring, and security validation. The project illustrates an operationally controlled approach to rulebase hardening and remediation ownership.
